Carpenter work we do in Toowoomba

Most carpentry problems come from one thing: rushing the set-out. Studs that are a few mm out, doors that don't sit plumb, architraves that won't mitre cleanly. Once it's sheeted and painted, the small mistakes become permanent.

Kevin's been a qualified carpenter since 2012, with 14+ years across renovations, fit-offs, structural work and repairs. The job gets marked out properly, built to lines that stay true, and finished so the painter has a clean surface to work with.

Because Kevin's also a qualified plasterer, framing flows straight into sheeting and finishing. One tradesman, no waiting on a second trade, no finger-pointing if something doesn't line up.

For dedicated outdoor work like decks and pergolas, see the deck builder Toowoomba page. For full-room or multi-room jobs, see renovations Toowoomba.

Why hire a licensed carpenter

The legal line in Queensland is $3,300. Building work above that figure has to be done by a licensed contractor under the QBCC Act. Carpentry, framing, structural work, decks over 1m, stairs, weatherboard, and most fit-offs sit above that threshold once labour and materials are added up.

A licensed carpenter brings three things a general handyman cannot. First, accountability through the QBCC: every job over $3,300 is contracted, insured, and dispute-pathway protected. Second, the legal scope to take on structural and load-bearing work, anything that needs sign-off, and jobs up to $200,000. Third, real public liability cover. KGW carries $5 million.

The QBCC also enforces a workmanship standard. If a licensed carpenter does work that fails, there's a real path to remedy through the regulator. If an unlicensed tradesperson does it, the only path is the courts, and most don't carry the insurance to back the work anyway.

None of that matters for hanging a single picture rail. It matters a lot once you're paying for framing, a new deck, a built-in wardrobe, weatherboard work, or anything where mistakes get buried in the wall and only show up later.

How it works

Our process, from first call to walkthrough

Same six steps whether it's a single door rehang or a multi-week fit-off. The work changes, the process doesn't.

  1. 1. First contact. Phone, WhatsApp, email or the form below. Send photos and a rough description. For small jobs Kevin will often quote off photos within a day. For larger work, we book a site visit.
  2. 2. Site visit and scope. $99 for site visits on larger jobs, credited toward the total if you proceed. Kevin measures up, photographs the area, and asks the questions that catch surprises later. Materials, finishes, access, timing, council requirements.
  3. 3. Written quote. Fixed-price quote back in writing, usually within 3 to 5 business days. Inclusions and exclusions are spelled out. No "extras" surprises later.
  4. 4. Contract and deposit. Jobs over $3,300 use a written QBCC-compliant contract. Larger renovations use a Master Builders Minor Works Contract. Deposits stay within QBCC limits (max 10% on residential).
  5. 5. Schedule and start. Most jobs start within 2 to 6 weeks of contract sign-off, depending on the queue. You get a firm start date and a day-by-day plan for the work.
  6. 6. Walkthrough and warranty. Site cleaned, rubbish removed, walkthrough with you to flag anything that needs attention. Workmanship warranty applies on every job. If something isn't right, Kevin comes back and fixes it.

Custom Timber Sliding Doors & Jarrah Stair Upgrade Entry Transformation, Centenary Heights, Toowoomba

Problem

This home had an outdated internal entry/foyer with dark aluminium framing, mismatched finishes, and bulky brick steps that made the space feel closed off and dated.

The transition between levels wasn't inviting, and the overall entry lacked the clean, modern feel the homeowners were after.

Solution

The existing entry structure was stripped back, including demolition of the old brick stairs to allow for a clean, properly integrated rebuild.

Custom sliding doors and fixed panels were installed, combining painted framing with frosted glass to maintain privacy while letting light move through the space.

New stairs were constructed using solid Jarrah timber, sourced locally from Creative Timbers Toowoomba. The timber was dressed, prepared, and finished onsite to suit the space and achieve a consistent, high-quality result.

All elements were installed to align cleanly with existing levels, trims, and surrounding finishes.

Outcome

The result is a clean, modern entry that feels open, bright, and intentional.

The custom doors create separation without closing the space off, while the Jarrah stairs add warmth and a high-end finish that ties everything together.

What was once a dated, awkward transition is now a standout feature of the home.

Second-Storey Ensuite Subfloor Replacement

Problem

The ensuite subfloor on this second-storey bathroom had been compromised by water damage and needed to be stripped back before any new bathroom finishes could be installed safely.

Solution

The damaged flooring was removed, the area was prepared, and new James Hardie Secura interior flooring was installed to specification. The sheets were fixed properly with screws and Sika adhesive rather than rushed in with nails.

Outcome

A solid, tile-ready subfloor installed to a high standard, giving the homeowner and the insurance process a proper long-term repair instead of a quick patch. A clean result for any Toowoomba carpenter handling water damaged subfloor work.

FAQ

Carpenter Toowoomba questions

What carpentry work do you take on?

Framing, decks, pergolas, fit-offs, doors, skirting, architraves, built-in wardrobes, stairs and handrails, weatherboard, window reveals, cabinetry installation and most carpentry repairs. If it needs to line up, sit plumb and finish clean, it's the right kind of job.

What's the difference between a carpenter and a handyman?

A licensed carpenter in Queensland can legally take on building work over $3,300, including structural and load-bearing work, framing, decks over 1m and most fit-offs. A handyman cannot. KGW holds QBCC licence 15552933 and $5M public liability insurance. The licence brings a written contract, dispute-pathway protection through the QBCC, and accountability if something goes wrong.

Do you do small carpentry jobs?

Yes. Door rehangs, single-room framing, architrave and skirting replacement, hardware swaps and minor repairs are all welcome. KGW is built for jobs too complex for a handyman and too small for a full builder.

Can you do framing and the plaster afterwards?

Yes. Kevin is qualified in both trades, so framing flows straight into sheeting and finishing with one tradesman. No waiting on a second trade and no finger-pointing if something doesn't line up.

How much does a carpenter cost in Toowoomba?

Small jobs are quoted as a fixed price off photos, often $250 to $900 for a few hours work including basic materials. Larger projects are quoted in writing after a $99 site visit. See the pricing section above for indicative rates on door hangs, skirting, built-ins, decks and pergolas. Every job over $3,300 is a written contract.

Can you build decks and pergolas?

Yes. Treated pine, hardwood and modified timber decks, plus pergolas, privacy screens and outdoor stairs. For dedicated deck pricing and timber comparisons see the deck builder Toowoomba page.

Do you take on commercial or fit-out carpentry?

Yes, selectively. Smaller commercial fit-outs, internal carpentry and partition work for offices and retail. Email kevin@kgwbuilds.com with the scope and we'll come back with a fixed-price quote and timeline.

Do you offer a workmanship warranty?

Yes. Carpentry installations and repairs come with a workmanship warranty. If something isn't right, Kevin comes back and fixes it. Statutory warranties under the QBCC also apply to all building work over $3,300.
