Renovations done by the person quoting

The most stressful part of a renovation isn't the building work. It's the coordination. Different trades on different days, no one taking responsibility for the join, and a builder who quoted but isn't actually on site.

KGW is built differently. Kevin is qualified in both carpentry and plaster, so he does most of the work himself. Demo, framing, sheeting, finishing. Same person, same standard. For other trades (electrical, plumbing, waterproofing, tiling), he brings in trusted Toowoomba locals he's worked with for years.

The result: one main contact, one set of standards, and a job that gets finished when he said it would.

KGW holds a QBCC SC1 (Site Supervisor 1) licence, which permits trade contracts up to $200,000. That covers almost every internal renovation a Toowoomba homeowner takes on, including bathrooms, laundries, kitchens, internal additions and multi-room remodels.

Best suited to single-room renos, bathrooms, laundries, ensuites, kitchens (excl. cabinetry manufacture), internal additions and multi-room upgrades. For new builds or major structural-only work, we'll happily refer you to a builder.

Why hire a dual-trade builder for renovations

The maths is simple. In a typical internal renovation, the plaster and carpentry trades make up 50 to 70% of the labour hours. The waterproofer, plumber, electrician and tiler are in and out for a few days each.

If your renovation is run by a tiler, plumber or general builder, those biggest-time trades get subcontracted. That means: a markup on the labour, scheduling games when the sub is busy, and a finger-pointing risk if the join between framing, plaster and tile doesn't line up.

KGW is run differently. Kevin is a qualified carpenter and qualified plasterer (14+ years on the tools since 2012). He does the plaster and carpentry himself, on site every week from demo to walkthrough. The waterproofer, plumber, electrician and tiler are coordinated around his schedule, not the other way around. You pay trade pricing for the biggest-time trades, get one main contact, and one combined workmanship warranty on the building work.

How much do renovations cost in Toowoomba

Real ranges, not "from low-mid five figures" guesswork. Every job is quoted as a fixed price in writing after the design and selections are locked in. Larger renovations start with a $199 site visit, credited toward the total if you proceed.

How it works

Our process, from first call to walkthrough

Same seven stages whether it's a single laundry or a multi-room reno. The scale changes, the steps don't.

  1. 1. First contact. Phone, WhatsApp, email or the form below. Send rough dimensions, photos of the current space, and the rough scope and budget bracket you're working with.
  2. 2. Site visit and scope. $199 site visit on renovation jobs, credited toward the total if you proceed. Kevin walks the space, photographs everything, checks behind walls where needed, and talks through what's realistic for your budget.
  3. 3. Design notes and selections. For bathrooms, kitchens and laundries, we walk through tile, fixture and vanity selections. You pick from Toowoomba suppliers (Reece, Beaumont, Bunnings Trade) or supply your own. Selections lock the quote.
  4. 4. Written quote. Fixed-price quote back within 5 to 10 business days. Inclusions and exclusions itemised. PC (provisional cost) items listed separately so you know what's a hard quote and what's a budget allowance.
  5. 5. Contract and deposit. Master Builders Queensland Minor Works Contract for residential renos. Deposits stay within QBCC limits (max 10% on residential). Stage payments aligned to milestones.
  6. 6. Build and coordinate. Demo, framing, plaster and carpentry done by Kevin. Plumbing, electrical, waterproofing and tile coordinated around his schedule. Daily clean-up, dust control, and a weekly check-in on progress and choices.
  7. 7. Walkthrough and warranty. Final clean, walkthrough with you, defect list if there is one. Workmanship warranty on the building work. Statutory warranties under the QBCC apply to all building work over $3,300.

"Kevin has done multiple projects for us and does excellent work. He has completed a new ceiling and trims in the kitchen and a new laundry fit out. He is very good at taking the time to explain the process and what is happening and most importantly he shows up when he says he is going to show up. Highly recommend and will be using him again for future projects."

FAQ

Renovations Toowoomba questions

What kind of renovations do you take on in Toowoomba?

Bathroom renovations, laundry upgrades, kitchen renovations (carpentry and plaster, not cabinetry manufacture), single-room and multi-room remodels, internal additions and renovation repairs. KGW holds a QBCC SC1 licence to $200,000. For new builds or major structural-only work we refer to a builder.

What does a QBCC SC1 licence mean?

SC1 (Site Supervisor 1) is a trade-class QBCC licence that lets the holder take on building work up to $200,000 per contract. It covers all the renovation scope KGW takes on (bathrooms, kitchens, laundries, full-room, multi-room and additions) without needing a separate builder. The licence comes with statutory warranties and dispute-pathway protection through the QBCC.

Why hire a dual-trade tradie for a renovation?

In most internal renovations the two highest-volume trades are plaster and carpentry. They're on site every week from demo through to fit-off. The waterproofer, plumber, electrician and tiler are in and out for a few days each. A dual-trade tradie like Kevin handles the highest-volume work himself, with no subcontractor markup and no scheduling games. One quote, one contract, one main contact.

Do you handle other trades like plumbers and sparkies?

Kevin handles all carpentry, framing, plaster and finishing himself. For other trades (electrical, plumbing, waterproofing, tiling), Kevin coordinates with trusted Toowoomba locals he's worked with for years. You still deal with one main contact and get one combined quote.

How long does a renovation take?

Single-room renovations typically take 1 to 2 weeks on site. Bathroom renovations run 3 to 5 weeks including third-party trades. Laundry upgrades run 1 to 2 weeks. Kitchen renos (carpentry and plaster scope) run 2 to 4 weeks once cabinetry is ready. Multi-room renovations and additions are quoted stage-by-stage. You get a day-by-day plan up front.

What contract do you use for renovations?

Building work over $3,300 uses a Master Builders Queensland Minor Works Contract. Larger renovations may use a QBCC residential building contract. The contract sets out scope, fixed price, payment stages within QBCC limits, timeline and the workmanship warranty. Statutory warranties under the QBCC also apply.

Do I need to move out during the renovation?

Usually no for single-room renos and laundries. We seal off the work area, control dust, and clean up daily. Bathroom renos: you can stay in the house, but the bathroom being renovated is out of action for 4 to 5 days during fit-off. Full-house renos and additions usually involve some out-of-house time for noisy or dusty stages.

Do you do new builds?

No. KGW focuses on renovations, additions, and internal building work up to the SC1 trade contract limit of $200,000. For new builds I'll happily refer you to a Toowoomba builder I trust.
