Deck builder work we do in Toowoomba
A deck that's built right lasts 20 years. A deck that's not built right rots in five. The difference comes down to a few details that get cut on cheap jobs: frame treatment, fixing choice, joist spacing, ground clearance, and water shedding off the boards.
Toowoomba puts outdoor timber through it. Hot summers, cold winters, the occasional storm. Decks built for Brisbane will cup, twist and gap within a few years up here. We use H3 treated hardwood for the frame, galvanised structural bolts at the connections, and stainless steel screws on the visible face. Joists are spaced correctly for the decking you've chosen (closer for hardwood, wider for composite), and boards are gapped for movement in both seasons.
Repairs are welcome too. Replacing rotten boards, sorting out a wobbly handrail, fixing a gate that's been dragging for years. Often it's cheaper to repair than rebuild, and we'll tell you straight after a site visit.
Internal carpentry work like framing, stairs, weatherboard and built-ins is covered on the carpenter Toowoomba page.
Why hire a licensed deck builder
Almost any deck build crosses the QBCC's $3,300 building work threshold once labour and materials are added up. That means it has to be done by a licensed contractor under Queensland law. Decks over 1m off natural ground level also need engineering and council approval.
A licensed deck builder gives you four things a general handyman cannot. First, the legal scope to build elevated decks, attach to the house, and pass a building inspection. Second, a QBCC-compliant contract with statutory warranties. Third, real insurance: KGW carries $5M public liability. Fourth, accountability through the QBCC if anything goes wrong. KGW holds licence 15552933 with an SC1 class that covers trade work up to $200,000.
The other thing licensed builders bring is correct framing. A deck looks fine on day one whether it was built right or not. The difference shows up in year three when an under-spec joist sags, a non-treated bearer rots from the post connector, or a fastener that should have been stainless rust-streaks through brand-new hardwood.
How much does a deck cost in Toowoomba
Real ranges, not "from low five figures" guesswork. Pricing is per square metre installed, including frame, deck boards, fastenings and labour. Fixed-price written quote after a $99 site visit, credited if you proceed.
Bigger price drivers are deck height (anything over 1m needs balustrade and engineering), whether council approval is needed, ground conditions for the footings, and timber choice. Composite saves long-term maintenance but costs more upfront.
Check availabilityOur process, from first call to walkthrough
Same steps whether it's a small repair or a new deck and pergola build. Lead time grows with the size of the job, not the steps.
- 1. First contact. Send photos of the existing space, rough dimensions, and what you've got in mind. Hand sketches and a few measurements are usually enough to start.
- 2. Site visit. $99 site visit on new builds, credited toward the total if you proceed. Kevin checks ground conditions, post locations, attachment points to the house, council approval requirements, and access for materials.
- 3. Written quote. Fixed-price quote back within 3 to 5 business days. Quote includes timber spec, frame spec, fastener spec, stair and balustrade detail if relevant, and any council approval costs.
- 4. Contract and engineering. Jobs over $3,300 use a written QBCC-compliant contract. Decks over 1m need engineering drawings; KGW coordinates with a local engineer and submits to council or a private certifier.
- 5. Build and inspect. Footings, frame, decking, balustrade, stairs. Mandatory inspections happen at frame stage and on completion where council approval applies. Most backyard decks take 1 to 3 weeks on site.
- 6. Walkthrough and warranty. Final clean, walkthrough with you, oiling notes for treated pine and hardwood decks, and the workmanship warranty. Statutory QBCC warranties also apply to all building work over $3,300.

Deck builder Toowoomba questions
How much does a deck cost in Toowoomba?
Most backyard decks in Toowoomba run $400 to $700 per square metre installed. Treated pine at low height sits at the low end. Hardwood (spotted gum, ironbark, merbau) sits in the middle. Modified timber and elevated decks with balustrade sit at the high end. Bigger price drivers are deck height (anything over 1m needs balustrade and engineering), stair count, and whether council approval is required.
What's the difference between treated pine, hardwood and composite decking?
Treated pine is the cheapest, lasts 10 to 15 years in Toowoomba, needs annual oiling. Australian hardwoods (spotted gum, ironbark, merbau) last 20 to 30 years and look better with age. Modified timber (Accoya, thermally treated pine) has excellent stability in the range's hot/cold cycles. Composite (Trex, NewTechWood) is no-rot, no-oil, lasts 25+ years but feels and sounds different underfoot. Trade-offs explained at quote stage.
Do I need council approval for a deck?
Decks under 1m off natural ground level are usually exempt from building approval in Toowoomba. Anything over 1m needs engineering and a building approval through council or a private certifier. Decks attached to the house may also need approval regardless of height. Kevin checks your specific job up front and tells you what's needed before you commit.
What fixings do you use on decks?
H3-treated hardwood for the bearer and joist frame, galvanised structural bolts at the connections, and stainless steel screws on the visible face of the decking. Galvanised screws rust-streak hardwoods within two summers in Toowoomba. Stainless costs more upfront but the deck looks the same in five years as it does on day one.
How long does a deck take to build?
Most backyard decks take 1 to 3 weeks on site once we start. Lead time from quote to start is usually 2 to 6 weeks depending on the queue. Engineered and council-approved decks add another 4 to 8 weeks at the front of the project for drawings, submission and approval.
Can you repair an existing deck?
Yes. Replacing rotten boards, fixing wobbly handrails, replacing bearers and joists, and re-fixing loose decking are all common jobs. Often it's cheaper to repair than rebuild, and we'll tell you straight after a site visit.
Do you build pergolas?
Yes. Attached pergolas (mounted to the house fascia or wall), freestanding pergolas, and timber pergolas over existing decks. Standard attached pergolas start around $4,500. Engineered pergolas for larger spans are quoted on scope.
Do you build fences and gates?
Yes. Timber fence builds and repairs, gate fabrication and rehangs, and privacy screens. From a single broken gate latch to a full boundary line.
